When It's Time To Change

As it's always a big adventure to move to another country, I didn't have much time to post articles on this blog. Indeed, I recently moved to Canada for my studies (analytical marketing in the luxury field).

When I first came here, all was white and cold, very different from where I used to live in Tunisia. I love my environment to radically change, and I'm not only talking about temperature. The mindset, way of living and even people's problem are so different here. It's...refreshing.

Here, I feel I can focus on what I really care about, interact more with people having the same interests as mine, and be a better person to have a better impact on my environment.

When I share my passion about fashion and luxury here, the first reaction is : "oh wow, but why did you come in Canada?". A professor of mine working on the luxury industry once told me : "well, why did THEY come to Canada?". Good question. Should a particular field better suit a society and not  another? After all, we're in North America, right? Everything should be possible here. And it is.

I have to focus on what I really like to do, keep drawing, keep blogging, keep sharing. That's why I plan to re-design this blog, so it would be a space that would better reflect my true passions.

Keep you posted!

One Step Ahead

Here I am again with a new drawing. I though I had lost inspiration, but I guess the summer had something to do with that. Indeed, I spent the summer in the US, living for a month in the Connecticut, then went to see Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Newport in Rhodes Island and some other fabulous places. Here are some photos of my magical trip ! (Thanks Instagram)

(Merci Instagram)

Step by Step

When I Started writing this blog, I'd never have thought it could have this impact, however modest it is. At first, I was obliged encouraged to open a blog where I could post some of my sketches. Being that passionate about fashion, luxury marketing and arts and not talking about the subject had no sense, so I decided I should have my own impact on this little part of society around me.

Then, little by little, my drawings have get noticed. People have contacted me for some practical advice, to congratulate me or to suggest me professional opportunities in the areas of art and fashion.

Though it's still a bit difficult to manage all my activities including studies, associative activities and my passion for drawing, I really want to pursue the Words And Shapes experience for a while.

Oh, and lately I've sung in front of a live audience for a charity dinner, I met Big Ali and Charles Aznavour at the same party, I consider the idea of working for the Tunis Fashion Week, I'll soon work with artists within a contemporary art festival and I'll maybe continue my studies in the artistic field. Let's dream a little.

By the way, this sketch, inspired by my favorites fashion blogger's illustrations, reflects my actual mood : ambition, shyness and the fact of realizing how lucky we can be.

I'll send you soon the details of my artistic escapades, meanwhile I'm step by step resuming my blog activity...

Pauline

Times are tough ! Not much time to get concentrate on the blog's in these days because of university stuff, but just to start this new year in beauty, I've wanted to share with you some pictures of Pauline.

Pauline is the creator of the Pauline Fashion Blog website, and this girl is awesomely great. Her style is just amazing, and her creativity dazzles me : her way of mixing materials, colors and crazy accessories makes her pretty little fashion icon of the web. On her blog, she shares all her styles, her "fashion adventures" (a concept that I just invented, but I'm sur you know what I mean), her travels and many tips for finding small wonders everywhere she goes. It is here, and it's worth a visit!

Pauline kindly asked me to design the banner of his site for what she calls the festival banners. Here is a draft of the project I drew some time ago and that I should finish soon. You could tell me what you think !

Without further ado, here's a concentrate of some of her best pictures to brighten up this time of gloom, no cloud will survive this explosion of color and mood.

Take care and happy new year!

IRO

Before they set up IRO in 2004, the brothers Laurent and Arik Bitton had their own music production company and rock group in New York City. The designers like to bring elements from their musical background into their minimalistic fashion, which can be described as “French chic meets New York street style”. The designers’ main source of inspiration is regular girls and women who are constantly on the lookout for new trends and enjoy experimenting with fashion in a unique way.
Though IRO means “color” in Japanese, the palette for the fall-winter 2011 collection is pretty neutral.

Well-known in its home country, IRO has gained remarkable international success. Its main foreign market is the USA and the brand has a good number of points of sales in the UK, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. IRO is also sold online on Net-a-Porter and Urban Outfitters in Europe.
IRO is a favorite among celebrities. Rihanna and Jessica Alba are fans, and Kate Moss sent a message to the Bitton brothers to request a Kilav, a ripped T-shirt that was a massive hit this summer.

The only negative point I would like to raise about IRO, even though I appreciate their designs and the new collection, are their lack of originality.

Tavi L'Enfant Prodige

A few days ago, while I was looking for a newspaper to buy, my eyes were enticed by the cover of the last magazine L'Officiel. When I went closer, I noticed it was a special number celebrating the 90 years of the magazine, a tome of 528 pages of which the front cover, traditionnaly posting the last fashion personnality of the season, left place to a young (very young) girl with an eccentric look, sitting on a stool and having a pad in the hand, near which there was the indication : "Tavi, 15 years old, Blogger". My curiosity gained me and I bought the magazine.

I get back home, eager to know more about this strange creature coming from nowhere. I refered to the specific page and began reading the article. I was stunned. Inspired. Subdued. There was some photos, and Tavi had nothing of a common teenager. She dyed her hair gray, was wearing clothes challenging those of Lady gaga, was posing with some personnalities like Alexander Wang and Karl Lagerfeld (even grimacing with Alexa Chung in the front rows) and was devoted to the elaboration of an online fashion magazine, Rookie.

Ok. We still don't know from where this girl is coming.  Let's try to take the story back to its beginning. Tavi is American and from her native Illinois, feeds a blog since 2009 she kept secret of her circle of friends and family (so she began at the age of 13...), an experimental laboratory of fashion and creative discoveries from the cinematographic and literary world. So far, some 37 000 fans come to her blog to discover Tavi's opinion about about the latest fashion news.

Fascinated by Internet which she's considering as being the most powerful tool of documentation of the contemporary workd, she was propelled at the summit when an article talking about her was published in the New York Times. A bend for Tavi who is then contacted by Jean-Paul Goude who says she's the Diana Vreeland of tomorrow. She even speaks about the creator of Grace Jones as a matter of course. I'is Selfish, it is Vanessa Paradis and Chanel, it's the French Correction, she says. With an incredibly precocious maturity, Tavi impresses the photographer who says that when he saw the girl, he wanted to hold her by the neck and to speak to her like a child but when she spoke to him, he was watching out of what he was saying 'cause she was very intimidating.

More over, the child prodigy was working on two big projects : an online magazine which content should be updated three times a day (after school, before diner and before sleeping) and a book, Diary, dedicated to the teenagers' feminine concerns on a pretty different way, according to her.

Succession seem assured in the fashion world !

Moschino A Venezia

It's under the sky of Venice that takes place the last campaign of Moschino, which stylist Rossela Jardini surprises us brilliantly with a very "sailor-military" and preppy collection. A very masculine collection in which the Miss Moschino, with shades of a feminine Corto Maltese , wears with pride captains' caps, spencers and blazers heightened of linings and other flowery accessories.
A beautiful way of prolonging summer a little bit longer...

Arlecchino

The Arlecchino boots by Sergio Rossi, so magisterial I had to draw a sketch of it. The commedia dell'arte is getting high, high...

Hello September

A vos paniers ! Moi je vais griffonner quelques croquis...

The holidays are already finished. It's time to tidy up our bikinis and our solar lotions with bitterness and nostalgia, reminding all the last good moments by the sea... Well. I didn't begin to make my shopping of comeback, but here's an outline of the new trendstendencies which, I hope for it, will console you in this period when we have to reconsider the existence of our alarm clock...

This autumn and winter, many tendencies call us: Black & White or Amerindian motives (and printed matters feathers) (a bohemian headland which would almost remind us the holidays), a tomboy touch for a boyfriend style (I like that), the return of the tuxedo, the Brigitte Bardot's retro style  in all the podiums, the cape under all its forms, the RED and the mustard yellow to accentuate our still warm bronzing suntan, the skirt pencil, peas, oversize coats and pants , and for quite a while already, superposition. Of everything. You got lost?

Here is of what to refresh our wardrobe before beginning a year which looks very rich in events, at least in my country, Tunisia. Yes, many new developments to come, but it doesn't necessarily mean that we have to neglect the main part: doing what pleases us. Ladies, bags! Meanwhile, I'm gonna scrawl some sketches...

70's resonance, a enhancement of classical, an mastered interpretation of the Prince of Wales... Stefano Pilati for YSL, gives us a work celebrating the parisian elegance for this fall-winter 2011-2012' collection. Already adopted by many designers, the cape - or gabardine - comes on our shoulders and imposes itself as indispensable this season. Longer at Dior, more street-chic at Chanel, or mixing a set of material in YSL and Alexander Wang, the cape takes us into the imaginary of Alexandre Dumas with lots of style and class.

Easy to tame? We'll see. What's sure is that this piece fits all styles and signs the appearance to all the blows. Even if the cape is one of those pieces that I can't wear easily, I shall reconsider the question ...

So America

The US. Two letters that speak for themselves ...

It's not because I feel a mix of fascination and admiration for this highly colorful american society, but the US intriguies me. And especially New York, the city where all dreams come true, they say, and where style and beauty reign at every street corner
in any form whatsoever...

Street shooting pictures also speak for themselves. Fashion is not just limited to those who can afford it, and a vintage apparel costing just a few dollars has always a perfect fall on the person who appropriates it. But it's mostly all this culture, these good manners only found overseas and where art is everywhere you wanna find it, that inspires me so much.

If there are some moments so mundane as a morning jog in Central Park or a shopping spree on Fifth Avenue (shopping bags on the wrists and a Starbuck's coffee in the hand) giving the impression that all New-yorker's life is so exciting, a few people look at the other side of the coin... If they are hyper-active at all times in accordance with the American way of life in which the cult of perfection is firmly established, it's always with a perfect style ... But at what cost?
